CPR & BLS: What is it?

CPR/BLS

What is CPR?

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a tool that you can use to help save a person’s life if their breathing or heart stops.

What is cardiac arrest?

  • Cardiac arrest is when a person’s heart stops beating. When this happens, the heart cannot pump blood to the rest of the body and death can happen within minutes without treatment.

Did you know that about 9 in 10 people who have cardiac arrest outside the hospital die? Knowing how to perform CPR can help improve those odds if it is done in the first few minutes someone is in cardiac arrest.

Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere! In fact, over 300,000 cases happen outside of the hospitals each year. 1 out of  7 of those happen at home. Sadly, half of those people do not get the help they need.

The good news is you do not have to have formal training to perform CPR, but it is important to know these steps.

  1. Call 911 immediately
  2. Give CPR
    1. Push down hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 pushes a minute. You can time your pushes to the beat of the song “Stayin’ Alive”
  3. Continue to give CPR until medical professionals arrive
